What does a event manager contractor do?
Event Manager contractors are engaged to plan, coordinate, and deliver corporate events, conferences, product launches, exhibitions, and internal engagement programmes on behalf of organisations that require specialist event capability without permanent headcount. Contract engagements range from managing single high-profile events through to running annual programmes of conferences, roadshows, and stakeholder engagement events. Event Manager contractors are used across the technology, financial services, professional services, pharmaceutical, and public sectors, particularly where events serve a commercial, regulatory, or brand-building function.
Event Manager contractors need a combination of project management discipline, supplier management skills, and creative problem-solving. The ability to manage budgets, timelines, and multiple vendor relationships simultaneously is essential. Experience with event management platforms such as Cvent, Eventbrite, or Hopin for virtual and hybrid events is standard across the market. Strong stakeholder management skills are critical, as event managers typically work across marketing, sales, communications, and senior leadership teams. For larger events, experience with venue sourcing, AV production management, health and safety compliance, and post-event analytics and reporting is expected at senior level.

What does Inside IR35 mean?
IR35 is UK tax legislation that determines whether a contractor is genuinely self-employed or working in a manner that resembles employment. When a contract is classified as inside IR35, income tax and National Insurance are deducted at source, typically via an umbrella company or agency PAYE. Headline day rates on inside IR35 engagements are generally higher than equivalent outside IR35 roles to account for the tax and employment cost structure.

Since April 2021, the end client is responsible for making this determination for medium and large private sector organisations. Contract rates for event manager roles typically range from £300 to £550 per day, depending on the scope of the role, required expertise, and the delivery expectations of the engagement. Inside IR35 rates are typically 15% to 30% higher than equivalent outside IR35 roles to account for tax and national insurance deducted at source by the fee-payer.
