What does a generative ai contractor do?
As a contract Generative AI, you are hired to build, integrate, and deploy AI systems that create new content, including text, images, code, audio, and video, using large language models, diffusion models, and other generative architectures. The scope of generative AI contracting spans a wide range of practical applications: building enterprise chatbots and conversational AI assistants, implementing retrieval-augmented generation systems that allow language models to draw on proprietary data, fine-tuning foundation models on domain-specific datasets, integrating generative AI capabilities into existing products and workflows via API, and building the evaluation frameworks needed to measure and improve the quality of generative AI outputs in production.
Generative AI contractors are expected to have strong Python engineering skills as a foundation, alongside hands-on experience with the major foundation model providers and their APIs, including OpenAI, Anthropic, Google, and the open-source model ecosystem via Hugging Face. Experience building RAG architectures using vector databases such as Pinecone, Chroma, or pgvector, alongside retrieval and reranking approaches, is standard across the market for enterprise AI assistant and knowledge management use cases. Familiarity with LLM orchestration frameworks such as LangChain or LlamaIndex is broadly assumed for contractors working in this space. The ability to design robust evaluation pipelines, manage prompt engineering at scale, and handle the production engineering challenges specific to LLM-based systems, including latency, cost, hallucination, and safety, is a consistent differentiator at senior level.
What is the market like for generative ai contractors?
Generative AI is currently one of the fastest-growing and highest-value specialist areas within the broader technology contracting market. Demand has grown at an exceptional rate since the widespread emergence of accessible foundation models in 2023, and shows no sign of stabilising as organisations across every sector race to integrate generative AI capabilities into their products and operations. The supply of contractors with genuine production experience building and deploying generative AI systems, as opposed to prototype and proof-of-concept experience, remains very limited relative to demand. This structural imbalance is maintaining day rates at the very top of the technology contracting market for experienced generative AI specialists.
What does Inside IR35 mean?
IR35 is UK tax legislation that determines whether a contractor is genuinely self-employed or working in a manner that resembles employment. When a contract is classified as inside IR35, income tax and National Insurance are deducted at source, typically via an umbrella company or agency PAYE. Headline day rates on inside IR35 engagements are generally higher than equivalent outside IR35 roles to account for the tax and employment cost structure.
Inside IR35 determinations are made where the working arrangements are considered to resemble employment, based on factors including the level of client control, the absence of a genuine right of substitution, and the presence of mutuality of obligation. Since April 2021, the end client is responsible for making this determination for medium and large private sector organisations. Many employers in financial services, government, and professional services assess the majority of their contractor engagements as inside IR35.

The regulatory uncertainty around generative AI in financial services means much of this work sits within governance-heavy environments that naturally lean inside IR35.
How much do generative ai contractors usually earn when working Inside IR35?
Contract rates for generative ai roles typically range from £600 to £1050 per day, depending on the scope of the role, required expertise, and the delivery expectations of the engagement. Inside IR35 rates are typically 15% to 30% higher than equivalent outside IR35 roles to account for tax and national insurance deducted at source by the fee-payer.
