About Our Inside IR35 Service Engineer Contract Roles
What does a service engineer contractor do?
Organisations bring in Service Engineer contractors to install, maintain, repair, and commission mechanical, electrical, and electromechanical equipment across manufacturing, building services, energy, and industrial environments. Contract engagements involve planned preventative maintenance, reactive fault diagnosis and repair, equipment commissioning, and the support of installation programmes. Service Engineers work on-site at client premises, industrial facilities, data centres, or across multiple locations depending on the equipment and sector.
Service Engineer contractors need hands-on technical competence with the specific equipment and systems relevant to their specialism, whether that is HVAC, industrial automation, power distribution, medical devices, or IT infrastructure hardware. Relevant electrical or mechanical qualifications and, where applicable, industry-specific certifications such as F-Gas, 18th Edition, or CompEx are commonly required. The ability to diagnose faults under pressure, work safely in industrial environments, and communicate clearly with site teams and clients is essential.
What is the market like for service engineer contractors?
Service Engineering contracting is a broad and active market driven by the ongoing maintenance and installation requirements of industrial, commercial, and critical infrastructure environments. Data centres, manufacturing facilities, building services, and the energy sector are the primary sources of demand. The growing complexity of building management systems, industrial automation, and critical power infrastructure is driving demand for contractors with specialist system knowledge. Rates vary significantly by specialism and sector, with data centre and critical infrastructure roles commanding premiums over general building services.
What does Inside IR35 mean?
IR35 is UK tax legislation that determines whether a contractor is genuinely self-employed or working in a manner that resembles employment. When a contract is classified as inside IR35, income tax and National Insurance are deducted at source, typically via an umbrella company or agency PAYE. Headline day rates on inside IR35 engagements are generally higher than equivalent outside IR35 roles to account for the tax and employment cost structure.
Inside IR35 determinations are made where the working arrangements are considered to resemble employment, based on factors including the level of client control, the absence of a genuine right of substitution, and the presence of mutuality of obligation. Since April 2021, the end client is responsible for making this determination for medium and large private sector organisations. Many employers in financial services, government, and professional services assess the majority of their contractor engagements as inside IR35.
On QualityContracts.co.uk, approximately 49% of roles with a stated IR35 status are classified as inside IR35, making it the most common arrangement across the contract market. The proportion varies by sector and role type. Each listing on this page displays its IR35 status where provided by the hiring organisation.
What service engineer roles are usually Inside IR35?
Inside IR35 service engineering work is found in organisations that provide ongoing equipment maintenance and support. The contractor attends customer sites on behalf of the client, follows their service procedures, and operates within their scheduling and reporting systems. Manufacturing, medical device, and technology companies with field service operations embed service engineers in their support teams.
How much do service engineer contractors usually earn when working Inside IR35?
Contract rates for service engineer roles typically range from £250 to £500 per day, depending on the scope of the role, required expertise, and the delivery expectations of the engagement. Inside IR35 rates are typically 15% to 30% higher than equivalent outside IR35 roles to account for tax and national insurance deducted at source by the fee-payer.
