What does a vmware contractor do?
VMware contractors are engaged to implement, manage, migrate, and optimise VMware virtualisation infrastructure and cloud management platforms, which remain central to the server virtualisation and private cloud estates of a large proportion of UK enterprise organisations. VMware's vSphere platform, including ESXi hypervisors, vCenter Server, and vSAN for software-defined storage, underpins the virtualised server infrastructure of most large UK organisations. NSX-T for software-defined networking and vRealize for cloud management are the other primary VMware components requiring specialist contractor expertise. The VMware contractor market has been significantly affected by Broadcom's acquisition of VMware and the subsequent changes to VMware's licensing model, which are driving accelerated migration decisions for many organisations.
VMware contractors are expected to have deep, hands-on experience with the specific VMware components relevant to the engagement. Strong vSphere administration skills, including ESXi host management, vCenter Server architecture, resource pool and cluster configuration, DRS and HA configuration, and vSphere lifecycle management for host patching, are expected for general virtualisation roles. For NSX-T roles, experience designing and implementing software-defined networking including overlay networks, tier-0 and tier-1 gateways, distributed firewall, and the integration of NSX-T with vSphere and third-party tools is the primary technical requirement. For cloud management roles, VMware Aria (formerly vRealize) Suite experience including vRealize Automation for self-service infrastructure provisioning and vRealize Operations for capacity and performance management is expected. VCP (VMware Certified Professional) certification in the relevant track is well regarded and frequently required. Increasingly, VMware contractors are expected to have experience with migration from VMware to alternative platforms, particularly given the post-acquisition licensing changes.
What is the market like for vmware contractors?
VMware contracting is a consistently active specialist market within the infrastructure contractor space, driven by the large installed base of VMware in UK enterprise and the ongoing operational and transformation requirements of those environments. The Broadcom acquisition of VMware and the resulting licensing and support changes are generating a significant wave of infrastructure transformation activity as organisations assess their VMware strategy, creating project-based contractor demand for VMware specialists who can both optimise existing environments and support migrations to alternative platforms. Day rates are shaped by the specialist platform knowledge required and the business-critical nature of virtualisation infrastructure. VMware contractors who combine vSphere expertise with knowledge of migration pathways to public cloud or alternative hypervisors are in particularly strong demand.
What does Inside IR35 mean?
IR35 is UK tax legislation that determines whether a contractor is genuinely self-employed or working in a manner that resembles employment. When a contract is classified as inside IR35, income tax and National Insurance are deducted at source, typically via an umbrella company or agency PAYE. Headline day rates on inside IR35 engagements are generally higher than equivalent outside IR35 roles to account for the tax and employment cost structure.
Inside IR35 determinations are made where the working arrangements are considered to resemble employment, based on factors including the level of client control, the absence of a genuine right of substitution, and the presence of mutuality of obligation. Since April 2021, the end client is responsible for making this determination for medium and large private sector organisations. Many employers in financial services, government, and professional services assess the majority of their contractor engagements as inside IR35.

What vmware roles are usually Inside IR35?
VMware contracts are heavily inside IR35 at around 80% of those with a stated status. Organisations running VMware as their virtualisation platform need ongoing administration: managing vCenter, maintaining host clusters, supporting VM provisioning, and troubleshooting performance issues. Financial services, government, and large enterprises with substantial VMware estates embed contractors in their infrastructure teams. The Broadcom acquisition has introduced licensing uncertainty, but VMware remains deeply entrenched in enterprise infrastructure.

Contract rates for vmware roles typically range from £450 to £800 per day, depending on the scope of the role, required expertise, and the delivery expectations of the engagement. Inside IR35 rates are typically 15% to 30% higher than equivalent outside IR35 roles to account for tax and national insurance deducted at source by the fee-payer.
