Summary: The Output Producer at 5 News plays a crucial role in shaping impactful stories through innovative production techniques. This position involves comprehensive responsibilities in TV production, including script writing, video editing, and social media engagement. The ideal candidate will possess strong editorial skills and a keen understanding of both television and digital content. This role is designed for an ambitious journalist eager to contribute to a dynamic newsroom environment.

Key Responsibilities:

  • TV production - produce high quality packages and engaging live segments
  • Writing for TV - write scripts, lead-ins and headlines, and sub to ensure accuracy and impact
  • Video editing - edit ulays, headlines and packages, selecting the best video and soundbites
  • Graphics creation - conceive, write, and execute creative graphics to enrich packages and live segments
  • 5 Phone segment – curate viewer comments and collaborate with the Programme Editors and Presenters on content
  • Social media - use social media platforms to publish 5 News content to maximum audience engagement
  • Digital production - work with reporters and correspondents to create tailored content for our digital audience
  • Original ideas - contribute story ideas and treatments for television and digital formats
  • Bulletin production - write and edit pictures for short bulletins throughout the day and at weekends, responding to developing stories
  • Gallery production - oversee programme timing and monitor breaking news in the gallery during transmission of short bulletins and oversee pre-recorded elements for our flagship programme
  • Pictures management - source and log pictures and stills images as needed
  • Supporting roles - occasionally cover for the Digital Producer, work on location, and deputise for the Assistant Programme Editor
  • Special projects – contribute to and run projects and long-term stories as required

Key Skills:

  • Proven knowledge and experience in news and current affairs, with a sharp editorial mind
  • Exceptional attention to detail and scrupulous fact-checking to maintain high editorial standards
  • Ambitious journalist capable of spotting a story and telling it clearly, creatively, and innovatively
  • Prior experience of Avid or equivalent editing software
  • Previous experience as an output producer preferred
  • Strong news judgement combined with initiative and confident decision-making
  • A keen visual eye for identifying strong pictures and producing effective graphics
  • Excellent writing skills for scriptwriting and digital storytelling
  • Flexible and technically adaptable; comfortable with ever evolving newsroom technology and workflows
  • Strong interpersonal skills; a collaborative team player with the ability to lead and manage others when required
  • Calm and composed under pressure, adaptable and flexible to changing tasks and roles
  • Understanding of the difference between TV and digital content and output
  • Ability to meet strict deadlines without compromising quality

Join 5 News as an Output Producer and help us shape the stories that matter! At 5 News, we deliver distinctive programmes and exclusive stories, putting people at the heart of our storytelling. As an Output Producer, you’ll play a key role in our newsroom - where your creativity and editorial skills will be recognised, supported and developed.

About the Role

We are looking for a strong, ambitious journalist who can spot stories that matter to our audience and tell them in innovative and engaging ways. You’ll be involved in all aspects of programme production – from crafting high-quality packages and editing video, to script writing and creating templated graphics. You’ll have responsibility for producing shorter bulletins throughout the day, evenings and weekends, and you will be present in the gallery to oversee transmission and live output. A clear understanding of the importance of social media is essential, as is the ability to work closely with correspondents and reporters to promote our content online and source stories for our digital platforms.
