What does a devops engineer contractor do?
DevOps Engineer contractors are engaged to build, automate, and maintain the pipelines, platforms, and practices that enable software development teams to deliver code reliably, securely, and at pace. The work spans CI/CD pipeline development, infrastructure-as-code, container orchestration, cloud platform management, monitoring and observability, and the cultural and process changes that enable development and operations teams to work more effectively together. DevOps Engineer contractors are brought in to build out a DevOps capability from scratch, to implement specific tooling or practices, to provide specialist expertise within a platform team, or to lead a DevOps transformation on a technology programme.
The technical skills expected of DevOps Engineer contractors are specific and well-defined. Proficiency in infrastructure-as-code using Terraform is a near-universal requirement, alongside strong container and orchestration skills with Docker and Kubernetes. Experience building and managing CI/CD pipelines using tools such as GitHub Actions, GitLab CI, Jenkins, or Azure DevOps is widely expected. Cloud platform expertise on at least one of AWS, Azure, or GCP is essential, as most modern DevOps work is cloud-centric. Scripting in Python or Bash for automation tasks, knowledge of monitoring and observability tooling such as Prometheus, Grafana, or Datadog, and familiarity with GitOps practices are broadly expected at mid to senior levels. Strong software engineering principles, including clean code, version control, and peer review practices, are increasingly assumed as DevOps engineering has professionalised.
What is the market like for devops engineer contractors?
The DevOps Engineer contract market is a particularly active and well-paying segments of the UK technology contracting market. Demand is sustained by the near-universal adoption of DevOps practices across technology organisations and the ongoing need for specialist DevOps capability during platform builds, migrations, and transformations. The growth of platform engineering as a discipline, alongside the increasing complexity of Kubernetes-based infrastructure, is creating additional specialist demand within the broader DevOps market. Rates have remained strong, with experienced DevOps Engineers who combine Kubernetes, Terraform, and cloud platform expertise commanding rates at the upper end of the infrastructure and engineering contracting market.
What does Outside IR35 mean?
IR35 is UK tax legislation that determines whether a contractor is genuinely self-employed or working in a manner that resembles employment. When a contract is classified as outside IR35, the engagement is treated as a business-to-business arrangement. The contractor operates through their own limited company, invoices for services, and manages their own tax affairs including corporation tax, self-assessment, and VAT where applicable.
Outside IR35 engagements are assessed against three key factors: the degree of control the client exercises over how the work is delivered, whether the contractor has a genuine right to provide a substitute, and whether there is a mutuality of obligation between the parties. Contracts that demonstrate contractor autonomy, project-based delivery, and the absence of ongoing employment obligations are more likely to sit outside IR35. Since April 2021, responsibility for making this determination sits with the end client for medium and large private sector organisations.
