Senior Java Developer (SC Clearedd)

Contract Length: 12 months initial (extensions expected)
Location: Primarily remote
Clearance: Active SC clearance required (NPPV3 highly desirable)
Start: ASAP

We are partnered with a major public sector programme delivering and sustaining a highly critical national system used across the UK. They are seeking an experienced Senior Developer to operate within a complex, Legacy-focused environment, playing a key role in the ongoing support, stabilisation, and modernisation of a large-scale enterprise platform.

This position centres around working within an established Java ecosystem, heavily underpinned by Oracle technologies and WebLogic application Servers. The successful candidate will bring deep expertise in navigating and evolving Legacy architectures, contributing to the refactoring and optimisation of existing services while ensuring system resilience, security, and performance at scale.

Key Responsibilities:

• Provide Level 3 support across a complex, business-critical system
• Support and modernise Legacy Java applications
• Refactor codebases and implement automated testing (TDD)
• Troubleshoot system issues and optimise performance
• Collaborate with platform, DBA, and support teams
• Lead code reviews and ensure engineering best practices
• Contribute to technical strategy, roadmaps, and decision-making
• Mentor junior team members and support team development
• Participate in an on-call support rota (post onboarding)

Essential Skills:

• Strong experience with Java (Java SE 8 and Java EE)
• Experience with EJB, JSP, and enterprise Java architectures
• Proven background supporting and modernising Legacy systems
• Oracle ecosystem experience (WebLogic, PL/SQL)
• Experience integrating systems using JDBC/ODBC
• Strong understanding of Elasticsearch (development and tuning)
• Experience with TDD, refactoring, and engineering best practices

Desirable Skills:

• Scripting experience (Perl and/or Python)
• Experience with ETL pipelines and Master Data Management tools
• Web and Middleware technologies (Nginx, Apache, Tomcat)
• Exposure to GIS technologies (OpenLayers, MapServer)
