About Our Inside IR35 Renewable Energy Contract Roles

What does a renewable energy contractor do?

Renewable Energy contractors are engaged across the full spectrum of disciplines required to develop, design, construct, commission, and operate renewable energy assets, spanning offshore and onshore wind, solar photovoltaic, hydropower, tidal, and the rapidly growing battery energy storage and hydrogen sectors. The pace of the UK's energy transition and the substantial investment being made in clean energy generation and storage infrastructure has created one of the most active project engineering and management contracting markets in the country. Contractors are engaged at all stages of the project lifecycle: in development for permitting, environmental impact assessment, and grid connection; in design for technical specifications and engineering drawings; in construction for project management, site supervision, and commissioning; and in operations for asset management, performance optimisation, and maintenance.

The skills most in demand across renewable energy contracting reflect the technical requirements of each project phase and technology type. Development-stage contractors include planning and consenting specialists, environmental consultants, and grid connection engineers with knowledge of the UK planning system and the National Grid connection process. Design-stage engineers include electrical engineers with HV and power systems expertise, structural engineers for foundation and tower design, mechanical engineers for turbine and balance-of-plant systems, and geotechnical specialists for offshore and onshore foundation design. Construction and commissioning roles require project managers, site supervisors, and commissioning engineers with relevant health and safety certifications for the working environment. BCAR and GWO certification is expected for most offshore wind site roles.

What is the market like for renewable energy contractors?

The market for Renewable Energy contractors is one of the most dynamic and high-growth segments of the UK engineering and project management contractor market. The UK's legally binding commitment to achieve net zero emissions by 2050, combined with the pace of offshore wind development and the investment pipeline for solar, battery storage, and hydrogen, is generating exceptional and sustained demand for contractors across all disciplines. The offshore wind sector is particularly active, with major programmes at Hornsea, Dogger Bank, and the emerging pipeline of floating offshore wind projects creating large and long-duration contract opportunities. The transition from conventional energy to renewables is also creating strong demand for contractors who can bring oil and gas or power industry experience and adapt it to the renewable energy context. Rates across renewable energy contracting are competitive and in some technical specialisms at the premium end of the engineering contractor market.

What does Inside IR35 mean?

IR35 is UK tax legislation that determines whether a contractor is genuinely self-employed or working in a manner that resembles employment. When a contract is classified as inside IR35, income tax and National Insurance are deducted at source, typically via an umbrella company or agency PAYE. Headline day rates on inside IR35 engagements are generally higher than equivalent outside IR35 roles to account for the tax and employment cost structure.

Inside IR35 determinations are made where the working arrangements are considered to resemble employment, based on factors including the level of client control, the absence of a genuine right of substitution, and the presence of mutuality of obligation. Since April 2021, the end client is responsible for making this determination for medium and large private sector organisations. Many employers in financial services, government, and professional services assess the majority of their contractor engagements as inside IR35.

On QualityContracts.co.uk, approximately 49% of roles with a stated IR35 status are classified as inside IR35, making it the most common arrangement across the contract market. The proportion varies by sector and role type. Each listing on this page displays its IR35 status where provided by the hiring organisation.

What renewable energy roles are usually Inside IR35?

Inside IR35 renewable energy work is found in operators and asset managers that maintain large portfolios of operational wind, solar, and battery assets. The work involves managing asset performance, coordinating maintenance programmes, and supporting the client's operational team on a sustained basis. As the UK's installed renewable capacity grows, the demand for ongoing operational support is increasing. DNOs, utilities, and asset management companies hire renewable energy professionals for inside IR35 operational roles.

How much do renewable energy contractors usually earn when working Inside IR35?

Contract rates for renewable energy roles typically range from £400 to £750 per day, depending on the scope of the role, required expertise, and the delivery expectations of the engagement. Inside IR35 rates are typically 15% to 30% higher than equivalent outside IR35 roles to account for tax and national insurance deducted at source by the fee-payer.

How many Inside IR35 renewable energy vacancies are there on Quality Contracts?

Over the past twelve months, we have tracked over 100 renewable energy contract roles across the site. Around one third of the roles currently listed on the site fall Inside IR35. Data reviewed up to June 2026.
