About Our Inside IR35 Kubernetes Contract Roles
What does a kubernetes contractor do?
The Kubernetes contractor role centres on the ability to design, implement, manage, and optimise container orchestration infrastructure using Kubernetes, which has become the dominant platform for deploying and managing containerised applications at scale in production environments. Kubernetes expertise sits at the heart of modern platform engineering and DevOps practice, and most Kubernetes contracting roles arise within broader cloud or platform engineering engagements rather than as standalone Kubernetes-only contracts. Contractors are brought in to build Kubernetes clusters from scratch, to migrate applications from virtual machine or bare-metal environments to Kubernetes, to implement GitOps-based deployment pipelines, to optimise existing Kubernetes environments for performance and cost, or to provide specialist Kubernetes expertise within a platform team that is building a production-grade container platform.
Clients expect Kubernetes contractors to bring are deep and operationally focused. Strong understanding of Kubernetes architecture, including pods, deployments, services, ingress, persistent volumes, and namespaces, is the foundation. Experience with Kubernetes in managed cloud environments, particularly AWS EKS, Azure AKS, and GCP GKE, is widely expected, as most production Kubernetes deployments run on managed services rather than self-managed clusters. Helm for Kubernetes package management and application deployment is broadly assumed. Proficiency in GitOps tooling, including ArgoCD or Flux, for managing cluster state through version-controlled manifests is increasingly expected at senior level. Knowledge of cluster security practices including pod security standards, network policies, RBAC, and secrets management using Vault or cloud-native secrets stores is widely valued. Infrastructure-as-code skills using Terraform for provisioning Kubernetes infrastructure and supporting resources round out the expected senior Kubernetes contractor profile.
What is the market like for kubernetes contractors?
Contract Kubernetes work sits within a particularly active and well-paying specialisms within the broader DevOps and platform engineering contractor market. Demand is driven by the rapid adoption of containerised microservices architectures across UK enterprises and the growing sophistication of Kubernetes deployments as organisations move from basic container deployment to production-grade platform engineering. The complexity of operating Kubernetes at scale, including the need for robust security, observability, and cost management practices, means that demand for experienced Kubernetes specialists consistently outstrips supply. Rates for senior Kubernetes engineers with strong cloud platform and GitOps experience are at the top end of the infrastructure contracting market.
What does Inside IR35 mean?
IR35 is UK tax legislation that determines whether a contractor is genuinely self-employed or working in a manner that resembles employment. When a contract is classified as inside IR35, income tax and National Insurance are deducted at source, typically via an umbrella company or agency PAYE. Headline day rates on inside IR35 engagements are generally higher than equivalent outside IR35 roles to account for the tax and employment cost structure.
Inside IR35 determinations are made where the working arrangements are considered to resemble employment, based on factors including the level of client control, the absence of a genuine right of substitution, and the presence of mutuality of obligation. Since April 2021, the end client is responsible for making this determination for medium and large private sector organisations. Many employers in financial services, government, and professional services assess the majority of their contractor engagements as inside IR35.
On QualityContracts.co.uk, approximately 49% of roles with a stated IR35 status are classified as inside IR35, making it the most common arrangement across the contract market. The proportion varies by sector and role type. Each listing on this page displays its IR35 status where provided by the hiring organisation.
What kubernetes roles are usually Inside IR35?
Inside IR35 Kubernetes work is found in organisations running production Kubernetes platforms that need ongoing engineering support: managing cluster upgrades, troubleshooting pod scheduling issues, maintaining Helm charts, and ensuring the platform meets security and compliance requirements. Financial services and technology companies operating at scale are the main hirers. The container orchestration market is still maturing, and experienced Kubernetes engineers are scarce enough that rates are strong regardless of IR35 treatment.
How much do kubernetes contractors usually earn when working Inside IR35?
Contract rates for kubernetes roles typically range from £550 to £950 per day, depending on the scope of the role, required expertise, and the delivery expectations of the engagement. Inside IR35 rates are typically 15% to 30% higher than equivalent outside IR35 roles to account for tax and national insurance deducted at source by the fee-payer.
How many Inside IR35 kubernetes vacancies are there on Quality Contracts?
Over the past twelve months, we have tracked over 200 kubernetes contract roles across the site. Around one third of the roles currently listed on the site fall Inside IR35. Data reviewed up to June 2026.
